Consumptives

June 22, 2010

A photograph for Budget Day and a quote from Neal Lawson* who writes in
‘All Consuming’ (Penguin, 2009):

“The relationship between markets and democracy is zero sum. The more we decide things individually as consumers, the less we can decide things democratically as citizens… Democracy is the means by which we decide when the wider interests of society come before the narrow interests of the individual or to put it more accurately, the desires of the consumer”.

*No relation to Nigel.
